Microdermabrasion Side Effects

Microdermabrasion Side Effects

Microdermabrasion is a popular procedure, but it has its risk just the same as anything else. Contrary to what many may tell you, no treatment that is of cosmetic purpose is completely safe and free from risks. Let us discuss some of the more well known side effects that are affiliated with the treatment of microdermabrasion.

One thing that can increase your chance of having an adverse reaction to the treatment can sometimes be found in your medical history. You will need to consult with a doctor or dermatologist to make sure you get the go ahead to have the procedure. Also your history with any medication that is prescription or over the counter needs to be addressed as this can have an affect on the treatment also.

The improper handling of the microdermabrasion machine or one that has not been properly sterilized can result in some very unfavorable conditions. Injury to the skin itself or infections can arise. It is found to be a rare situation if this happens, but you need to remember, it can happen! Make sure the individual that will be giving the treatment has been educated properly and is experienced in the field of microdermabrasion.

Hyperpigmentation can result from improper use also. This is the discoloring of the skin in that the pigment becomes either too light or too dark depending on the persons skin pigmentation. Again, this lies with your doctor to discuss with you if they think this may be a problem. Women who are pregnant or nursing and people with active herpes, malignant tumors, have keratosis or are using accutane should not have microdermabrasion, as complications are most likely to arise in people affected with any of these conditions.

Although it is highly unlikely, one can ingest the micro crystals being used in the treatment or dust from the crystals, and may therefore experience problems that are respiratory in nature. One would usually have to ingest a large quantity of these for this to happen, but it is possible. Damage to the eyes has also been reported and protection should be worn by the treatment giver as well as the patient receiving the treatment. Also, after the procedure there is a common reaction of redness and flaking of the skin in most all that have these treatments, and some may even experience some discoloration in their skin's pigment. This should not cause you to worry unless these symptoms continue to persist.
